You Were Built for This. So Take the Break, Then Keep Going.

Exam season is tough, but your wellbeing matters just as much as your grades. Taking breaks and finding joy in what you love to do help you stay focused, motivated, and resilient. Keep going. You've got this.

When Everything Hits at Once

Hey! Welcome to the first post of The Daily Drill! I'm glad you're here.

I know it's exam season, and everything feels like it's happening all at once. The back-to-back exams, balancing extracurriculars with work, finding time to relax; it's a lot. And some days, it feels like there just aren't enough hours to get through it at all. If you're feeling burnt out or just tired of the constant busywork, you're not alone.

College can feel like a never-ending checklist, especially when it seems like your grades will make or break your future. But here's something I hope you don't forget: you come first.

Take the Break. Like, Actually.

Take breaks. And real ones. Not just the "scroll on your phone while stressing" kind. Take a moment to breathe, laugh with friends, or treat yourself to something that makes you feel good. Whether it's a walk, a coffee, a side quest, or a night off. It might seem like a waste of time in this busy season, but those little joys matter.

When you do something enjoyable, your brain releases dopamine. It's not just a mood booster but it actually helps you stay motivated, focused, and emotionally balanced. So yes, that treat-yourself moment? It's important. So do something spontaneous. Even if it's just for 5 minutes. If you study back-to-back, your brain won't be able to remember all that information. So use it as a little excuse to grab a sweet treat to reward your time studying, enjoy the weather outside, or even spend an hour doing something that has nothing to do with school.

Small Habits That Make a Big Difference

Here are a few things that help during exam season:

  • Block out time for rest before you hit a wall where you're genuinely exhausted and can't do anything anymore.

  • Make a short list of what actually needs to get done today. It helps relieve some pressure off your mind because you're not trying to constantly remember what you have to do for the day. This can be on a little sticky note, your phone, or laptop.

  • Say yes to joy without guilt. Remind yourself: college should be enjoyed, not just endured. Yes, your grades matter but so do you. College only happens once and it's the most memorable part of your life. So go out and make those crazy memories you'll remember one day.

You're Built for This. You Got It.

So, keep showing up. You've got this! I know you may wonder if this is worth it, but remember your purpose, dental or non-dental related. You're building something bigger than just a GPA. You're slowly moving towards your dreams, even if it seems a little far right now. And if you need someone to talk to, I'm always here too. I am a pre-dental student as well and very well relate to the rigor of the undergraduate coursework.

Let's keep going. Together…… Breathe. Take it one step. At. A. Time. Exams can be hard sometimes, but you're harder to break and… it's worth it in the end.
